Bhavna Jagwani had lost her vision briefly when she was 27. She regained it 25 days later, but that gave her a new purpose in life. Believing there was a hidden purpose behind everything, she took the initiative to set up Jaipur’s first eye bank- The Eye Bank Society of Rajasthan (EBSR) in 2002. More than 4,000 people got vision as a result of the efforts of EBSR. In 2014, Bhavna and MFJCF set up an organ donation campaign and transplant program in Rajasthan. Through organ donations, many people got new lives.
She’s been awarded by State Bank for Special Service, Rajmata Gayatri Devi Award for Women’s Excellence, Rajasthan Gaurav Award, India Today Summit Award, & many prestigious awards.
Major Dr. Meeta Singh is a doctor, a soldier, and a humanitarian who works for equality, empowerment, and dignity of humanity, especially for the marginalized and disadvantaged sections of society. She served 10 years in the Indian Army as a Medical Officer. Dr. Singh has worked with several NGOs and conducted awareness programs on the prevention of HIV and Aids, public health, and community health.
She has worked towards establishing dignity for girls & women and was chosen to lead the program ‘Dignity of the Girl Child’ in Rajasthan to combat feticide. Dr. Singh worked with the worst-hit districts with the lowest girl sex ratio. Her efforts lead to an increase in the girl child sex ratio. For her achievements, she was honored with the “Outstanding Woman” award by the National Commission for Women. She is still actively involved with various interventions like the shelter home for the homeless, campaign for a safer Jaipur, prevention of child marriage, and working with men and boys to enable them to become sensitive, respectful, and responsible citizens of the country and the world.

Amidst the hustle & bustle of the narrow bylanes of Pink City, there rests an abundance of cultural and artistic heritage, which is the true essence of Rajasthan! From the many traditional art forms which are kept alive by Jaipurs’ skillful artisans, there is one that makes its appearance only during the Holi festival. We are talking about ‘Gulal Gota’ – Gulal means colours and Gota means small balls. This rare art form of Jaipur needs to be preserved and documented and hence we decided to bring the first-hand experience of what goes into the making of Gulal Gotas. We met the seventh-generation master artist Awaaz Mohammad who is carrying the 400 years old legacy and practicing this craft for the past seven decades.
Settled in the nook of the old Pink City, we visited his home where he crafts wonders of the timeless art of Lac. Awaaz Mohammad is one of several Muslim artisans who are keeping alive the age old tradition along with his daughter Gulrukh Sultana, son Praveen and other family members. Through the long interesting conversation while sitting at his charming little workshop, here is what Awaaz Mohamad ji shared and demonstrated about the unique Gulal Gotas.
The Royal Affair- Awaaz Mohammad briefed about the older days when he used to go to Jaipur’s City Palace with his father with packs of Gulal Gotas where the royals used to play Holi with their guests with it. It was the members of the royal family who roamed around on their Elephants to splash colours on the streets. They used to throw ‘Gulal Gotas’ balls made of Lac and filled with colors to celebrate Holi festivities. They are still keeping this old charm alive.
What are Gulal Gotas ?
Gulal Gotas are made with Lac. The Lac is a natural product that comes from trees like Beri, Kusum, Palash, and others.
Process- Artisans use fire (anghitti) and copper pipettes (small rod) to blow up lac into round-shaped hollow balls. The Lac is very delicate and it is to be done very carefully else the lac will burst like a balloon burst. After blowing it is kept in the water to cool down. One ball weighs around 5 gms. Once they cool and the water is completely dried the next step is to fill them up with approximately 10-12 gms of herbal ‘gulal’ made of fragrant arrowroots and seal them with Parchi (paper cover) with the help of Arrarot glue. The ready balls filled with colors are further packed in boxes. There are multiple hands involved in the entire process and not just done by one person. Mostly the entire family sits and finishes each piece.
The most amazing part of the entire process comes at last when these balls are thrown while playing Holi. It does not hurt anyone but only the splash of colour comes out. But did you know that Gulal Gota is also a sign of communal harmony as Holi is a Hindu festival & the Gulal Gotas are made by ‘Manihaars’ from the Muslim community.

On the other hand, some people with depression may find it difficult to get out of bed and may sleep for long periods during the day.
Loss of interest in favorite activities Some people turn to hobbies they enjoy when they feel blue, but those with major depression tend to avoid them, according to the American Psychiatric Association (APA). If you or someone you know usually loves to garden but can’t muster the energy to go outside, let alone work in the yard, that can be a red flag.
Increase in energy Ironically, when depressed people have made a decision to do something drastic, such as killing themselves, they may go from slowed down to far more energetic. That’s because they feel a sense of relief in having come to a resolution, so if you notice a drastic change like this in someone you love, it’s a big cause for concern. This can also manifest as reckless behavior — particularly in men — such as indulging in risky sexual behavior, overspending, or abusing substances, such as alcohol or drugs, according to the (ADAA).
Change in appetite Some people overeat when they’re depressed or anxious, but in people with severe depression, the opposite is usually true. “A depressed person may stop eating because he or she is no longer concerned with physical well-being,” says John Whyte, MD, MPH, a board-certified internist in Washington, DC,
Feeling or seeming on edge “In many people, depression can manifest with irritability, impatience, or anxiety and worry. Trouble concentrating is another related symptom.
Expressions of guilt Feeling excessive guilt or worthlessness can also be a hallmark of depression, according to the APA. People might feel guilty because they are depressed or aren’t doing enough at home or at work.
Unexplained physical symptoms Since the body and mind are connected, depression can also start to manifest in physical ways that are resistant to treatment, such as persistent headaches, digestive issues, or unexplained pain, according to the ADAA.

What Needs To Be Done
Encourage your loved one to seek professional help. If your loved one is considering harming themselves or having other dark thoughts, immediate treatment is critical.
Create a safe environment. “If the person expresses suicidal thoughts, remove any potentially lethal items from the home, such as guns,” Dr. Dunlop says.
Be kind. “Blaming or chastising depressed people for feeling low or unmotivated is not helpful and typically serves to reinforce negative feelings they already have,” Dunlop says. “Instead, open the discussion in a nonjudgmental way and encourage the person to seek help.”
Be willing to support treatment. Offer to help your loved one prepare a list of questions for a provider about depression or drive them to appointments.
More than 80% of people with clinical depression can be successfully treated with early recognition, intervention, and support.
